Veteran Track and Field Analyst Hubert Lawrence Dies, Leaving Sporting Community in Mourning
The track and field community is in mourning following the unexpected passing of Hubert Lawrence, a veteran analyst, author, and columnist in the field.
Born in 1960, Lawrence, an alumni of St. Jago, would have turned 64 this year.
He peacefully passed away at home on Friday.
Renowned as the encyclopedia of Jamaican track and field, Lawrence was a fixture in TVJ’s coverage of the Olympics, World Championships, and various regional and local meets.
He also contributed as a columnist for the Gleaner. His expertise was slated to be part of TVJ’s coverage for the Gibson McCook Relays on Saturday, prior to his sudden demise.
Lawrence’s passion for track and field led him to begin providing commentary 33 years ago, in 1991.
Throughout his career, he authored and co-authored several notable books, including “Champs 100” in 2010, “The Power and the Glory: Jamaica in World Athletics, From World War II to the Diamond League Era” in 2012, and “50 Days of Fire” in 2022.
