Local Government Elections Set for February 26

Jamaica is gearing up for its Local Government Elections, scheduled to take place on Monday, February 26, after Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, officially announced the date during an address at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James on Thursday, February 1.

Nomination Day, a crucial step in the electoral process, has been set for Thursday, February 8, allowing prospective candidates the opportunity to declare their intent to run for office.

The upcoming elections, which will see 228 electoral divisions contested, play a pivotal role in determining the Councillors and Mayors responsible for developing, managing, and maintaining infrastructure and public facilities across the island.

The last Local Government Elections were held in 2016, with the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) emerging victorious and securing the majority of seats in the Municipal Corporations.

However, the anticipated elections scheduled for every four years were postponed on three occasions since November 2020 due to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
