Local Government Election: Over 6,000 Polling Stations Prepared for Voters Across Jamaica
Today, 6,726 polling stations will open at 7 a.m. for the Local Government Election, accommodating voters across the region.
A total of 499 candidates are vying for positions in 228 divisions, including three contenders for the direct election of the Mayor of Portmore.
The candidates represent various parties and independents, with 229 each from the Jamaica Labour Party and the People’s National Party, four from the United Independents’ Congress, and 37 independents.
The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) assures readiness for the election and urges voters to exercise patience, noting that polling stations will be open until 5:00 p.m.
The EOJ confirms observation of the election by local group Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections (Caffe), alongside a small delegation from the Organization of American States and the British High Commission.
Following the closure of voting, preliminary ballot counting will occur within the polling stations.
