Jamaica’s Mega Montego Bay Perimeter Road Project is Advancing Swiftly!

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has revealed significant progress on the Montego Bay Perimeter Road Project.

Despite facing initial hurdles related to a labour shortage, the ambitious project is now well underway, promising to reshape the transportation landscape in the region.

The extensive infrastructural endeavour, which commenced last September, is set to give rise to the longest bridge in Jamaica, spanning an impressive 14.9 kilometres from Ironshore to Westgate.

The US$274.5 million design-build contract, undertaken by the China Harbour Engineering Company, has encountered setbacks due to local labour discontent, with workers initially resisting the offered £3,000 for a day’s work.

Prime Minister Holness expressed his satisfaction with the resolution of the labour challenges, emphasising the coordinated efforts to organise the workforce.

During a recent tour of the burgeoning project, he highlighted the transformative impact it will have on regional connectivity, with particular attention to the Long Hill bypass connecting Montego Bay to Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.

“We intend to complete this in record time, but we are also going to be opening up many new corridors for development.

“Already, excavation work has started. Over 60% of the route, I’m told, is excavated to the point where four-wheel-drive vehicles could traverse it. We are going to be cutting through new areas, some forested areas,” Prime Minister Holness stated.

Aside from promising enhanced transportation, the project is anticipated to stimulate investment in the housing sector.

The creation of the Montego Bay Perimeter Road is set to unlock previously inaccessible land, offering new opportunities for development. Prime Minister Holness sees this as a catalyst for a boost in the parish’s housing stock, with the potential for economic growth and increased residential options.
