Jamaica’s Basil Watson Wins UK Public Statues and Sculptures Association Marsh Award for The National Windrush Monument
Celebrated Jamaican sculptor, Basil Watson, has emerged triumphant by popular vote for the United Kingdom’s 2023 Public Statues and Sculptures Association (PSSA) Marsh Award, securing the title for the most popular new sculpture shortlisted.
Watson’s masterpiece, “The National Windrush Monument,” standing tall at the bustling Waterloo Station in London, was among the prestigious artworks nominated for this prestigious honour.
On the PSSA’s official website, Watson offered poignant insight into the inspiration behind his awe-inspiring creation saying:
“The National Windrush Monument has been my personal Empire Windrush voyage, literally and figuratively transporting me along a journey through my past, present and into the future.
“It has opened insights into my past that were seemingly meaningless dots within my history, and connected them with my present experiences and is propelling me into a future that has a new perspective and appreciation of who I am”
The monument itself, a striking visual narrative, prominently features individuals adorned in their distinctive attire, clutching bulging suitcases, symbolising the significance of the Windrush journey.
According to Watson, this artwork serves as a tangible and evocative reminder of a historic and seismic moment in human history.
