Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson Nominated for World Athletics Fair Play Award

World 200 metres champion Shericka Jackson, whose remarkable display of sportsmanship during the World Athletics Championships in Budapest captured the hearts of fans worldwide, has been shortlisted for the prestigious International Fair Play Award.

The announcement came yesterday, as World Athletics unveiled the six outstanding moments recognised for their fair play and camaraderie during this year’s championships.

Shericka Jackson’s heartwarming moment of embrace with American sprinter Sha ‘Carri Richardson has garnered international attention.

During the women’s 200-metre final, Jackson secured the gold medal in a remarkable time of 21.41 seconds, setting both national and championship records. Richardson finished third with a time of 21.92 seconds. Following the race, both athletes spontaneously embraced each other.

This touching display of sportsmanship is among the six moments shortlisted for the International Fair Play Award. World Athletics has invited fans from around the world to participate in the voting process to choose their favourite moment.

The shortlist includes several other incredible acts of fair play, such as Daniel Ebenyo of Kenya saluting his teammate Sebastian Sawe as Sawe was overtaken during the final stages of the men’s half marathon.

Australia’s Nina Kennedy and American Katie Moon sharing the women’s pole vault gold medal after being unable to be separated after their final attempt is another highlight of fair play.

Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey exhibited incredible compassion when she went back to comfort Sifan Hassan after the Dutch star’s dramatic fall on the home straight in the women’s 10,000-meter final.

The shortlist is completed by Britain’s Jessica Warner-Judd, who, after finishing 8th in the women’s 10,000 meters final, was the only athlete to wait and shake hands with the final placed runner who completed the event some distance behind the rest of the field.

Voting for the International Fair Play Award will close at midnight on Sunday, November 5. The finalists will be announced on November 7, and the winner will be revealed on World Athletics’ platforms in the lead-up to the World Athletics Awards in Monaco on December 11.
