Jamaica Claims Gold at Robotics Olympics in Singapore!
Jamaica’s robotics team has emerged victorious at the Robotics Olympics held in Singapore from October 7 to 10.
The team’s exceptional efforts were recognised with the prestigious Katherine Johnson Award for Engineering Documentation, named after the renowned African-American mathematician Katherine Johnson, who played a critical role in NASA’s early space missions.
The Katherine Johnson Award is bestowed upon the team that best demonstrates the meticulous process of designing and building their robot, highlighting the rigorous engineering and problem-solving skills required to excel in the competition.
This year’s triumphant team was led by the talented captain, Johnathan Smith, a student from Campion College.
The team comprised an array of bright minds, including Shawn-Michael Ferguson, also from Campion College, Duncan Stanley from Wolmer’s Boys’ School, Terrance Grant from Glenmuir High School, Kimmi Chan representing Hillel Academy, and Taeija-Lee Hall-Watts from The American International School in Kingston (AISK).
Prime Minister Andrew Holness took to his social media platforms to express his heartfelt congratulations to the team, saying, “I am immensely proud of Team Jamaica! We won the Gold medal for the Katherine Johnson Award for Engineering Documentation, in which the team had to demonstrate its robot-building process.”
The achievement of the Jamaican robotics team underscores the nation’s commitment to excellence in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Their success at the Robotics Olympics serves as an inspiring example for young Jamaicans and students around the world who aspire to reach new heights in the realm of robotics and engineering.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamina Johnson Smith also lauded the team’s remarkable victory, extending her congratulations to the students and their dedicated teachers, who guided and supported them throughout their journey.
