Reggae Boyz Brace for Tough Honduras Test at National Stadium

Rudolph Speid says Jamaica’s attacking performance against Guatemala has given the Reggae Boyz encouragement ahead of their Nations League clash with Honduras, particularly because of the quality of the goals they produced.

The interim head coach singled out Rumarn Burrell’s effort as the type of goal Jamaica had not produced in a long time, while describing the team’s overall offensive showing as one of the biggest positives from Friday’s match.

Jamaica returned to the National Stadium for training on Sunday morning, with Speid expecting his full squad to be available despite several players picking up minor knocks in the 3-2 victory over Guatemala.

Questions remain over whether Jamaica will retain the 3-5-2 system used in that match after experiencing defensive difficulties, but Speid does not believe the formation itself was necessarily responsible. He said the bigger issue was execution and indicated that the coaching staff had identified areas requiring improvement.

Attention now turns to a Honduran team Speid expects to arrive with added urgency after suffering a surprise 3-2 home defeat to Suriname in their opening Group B fixture.

According to Speid, Honduras traditionally play with considerable intensity and their need for a positive result could make Monday’s encounter Jamaica’s most demanding assignment in recent times. Another setback would place the Hondurans in a difficult position in the competition.

The Jamaica coaching staff has repeatedly reviewed Honduras’ defeat to Suriname, although Speid expects their opponents to make adjustments. He believes some familiar tendencies should still remain despite any changes made following that result.

The teams will meet at 7:00 pm at the National Stadium, with Jamaica looking to strengthen their position after collecting three points from their opening match. Honduras, meanwhile, enter the contest without a point following their loss to Suriname.

Jamaica also carry a strong recent record into the fixture. The Reggae Boyz have gone eight consecutive matches without losing to Honduras, whose most recent victory in the series came 13 years ago. Their previous meeting in Kingston, during the 2024 Nations League, finished 0-0.

The top two teams in Group B will qualify for the quarter-finals, where they will be paired with one of Mexico, the United States, Canada or Panama.

Jamaica began their campaign last Friday with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Guatemala, while Honduras opened their Nations League schedule with the same scoreline in defeat against Suriname.
