Jamaica’s Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw Nominated for Ballon d’Or
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, the prolific Jamaican forward who also plays for Manchester City, has secured her place among the nominees for this year’s women’s Ballon d’Or, the pinnacle of individual recognition in football.
This groundbreaking announcement was made on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in Shaw’s career as she becomes the first Jamaican, regardless of gender, to be nominated for this prestigious award.
Shaw, renowned for her formidable abilities as a striker, left an indelible mark last season by netting an astonishing 31 goals in just 30 matches for Manchester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
Beyond her goal-scoring feats, she also contributed nine crucial assists to her team’s campaign.
Such exceptional performance inevitably earned her a well-deserved spot among the 30 nominees shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or.
Among these contenders, Spain’s World Cup sensation, Aitana Bonmati, stands out as the favourite to clinch the coveted award.
Bonmati’s standout performances were instrumental in Spain’s triumphant World Cup journey in Sydney last month, making her a compelling candidate for the honour. Notably, she is not alone in representing Spain, as three of her World Cup-winning teammates, Olga Carmona, Salma Paralluelo, and Alba Redondo, are also among the nominees.
Patricia Guijarro and Mapi Leon, both hailing from Spain, further bolster the nation’s presence on the prestigious list.
