Demarai Gray, the 29-year-old winger for the Reggae Boyz, netted his first goal on Jamaican soil, securing a 1-0 victory over Honduras as Jamaica kicked off their CONCACAF Nations League Group A campaign  on Friday.

The former Everton player’s performance left him feeling ecstatic.

“It was a great feeling,” Gray exclaimed as he reflected on his pivotal contribution to the team’s success.

Gray’s goal, his third for the Reggae Boyz, came in the 64th minute of the match when he brilliantly capitalised on a through ball from Bobby Decordova-Reid.

Gray acknowledged the challenges posed by Honduras, describing the game as less than ideal during the first half. “It wasn’t the nicest game,” he admitted, “Credit to Honduras because they were aggressive and made it difficult for us, but in the second half, we came back together and came up with a game plan.”

Patience proved to be the key to unlocking Honduras’s defense. Gray noted the importance of waiting for the right moment, and on this occasion, that moment came to him.

“It was important that we got the three points because that is all that matters in the end,” Gray emphasised. “We’ll look back on what we did well and what we did badly and focus on the next game.”

For Gray, the joy of the victory was amplified by the opportunity to score his first goal in front of the passionate Jamaican crowd. “Scoring in front of the fans was a great feeling,” he shared.

“But, most importantly, we take the three points. The fans came out to watch us, so we needed to give them something to celebrate, and we did that.”

He also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the Jamaican fans. “We have to give thanks for them because without them, we’re half as strong. When we play at home, especially, we have to give our best. Jamaica as a team are going to keep growing,” he affirmed.

Gray’s outstanding performance has set the stage for the Reggae Boyz as they prepare to host Haiti at the same venue on Tuesday. With the momentum from this victory, fans are undoubtedly eagerly anticipating another thrilling display of football.
