JFF President Declares 2023 As Jamaica’s “Most Successful Year Ever” In Football!

Speaking passionately at a press conference recently hosted at the JFF headquarters, President of the Jamaica Football Federation, Michael Ricketts exulted in the remarkable achievements of the nation’s football endeavours so far this year.

“We are delighted to be here this morning basking in the glory of a number of the achievements of a number of our national units,” Ricketts proclaimed.

“I would say without apology that, so far, this must go down in history as the most successful year ever in the history of football in this country,” he added.

Undoubtedly, foremost among these achievements is the triumphant journey of the Reggae Girlz, etching an indelible mark as the first Caribbean team to make the Round of 16 at a FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Their ascent from Group F, a group that included juggernauts France and Brazil, was punctuated by impressive draws against both titans and a commanding 1-0 victory over Panama.

Culminating with five points, the Girlz advanced to the Round of 16, where they encountered a very physical battle but succumbed 0-1 to Colombia on Tuesday.

On the men’s side, the Reggae Boyz etched their own narrative by storming into the semi-finals of the Concacaf Gold Cup. Along the way, they etched an emphatic victory in the tournament, overpowering St. Kitts & Nevis with a resounding 5-0 triumph during the group stage.

The Gold Cup campaign was further embellished by momentous victories over Guatemala, ending an 11-year drought, and Trinidad & Tobago, marking the first victory against them in seven years.

Demarai Gray emerged as a luminary, securing a berth in the tournament’s esteemed “team of the tournament.”

Embracing the momentum, other Jamaican contingents scripted their own successes.

The Under-20 Reggae Girlz dazzled, securing a decisive 4-1 victory over Panama at the Concacaf U-20 Championships, thus triumphing over a Central American adversary for the first time since 2020.

Meanwhile, the Under-15 Reggae Boyz have firmly established their dominance, securing a coveted place in the semi-finals of the Concacaf U-15 Championship following victories over El Salvador, Saudi Arabi and Honduras.
