Jamaica Provides Extensive Support for Haitian Asylum Seekers
Minister of National Security Dr. Horace Chang assures that the group of 37 Haitians who arrived in Portland in July will maintain their access to comprehensive assistance as they navigate the ongoing asylum legal proceedings.
Dr. Chang recently visited the Haitian individuals at a facility in Robins Bay, St Mary, and highlighted the collaborative efforts involving various support groups and government ministries to ensure their welfare, safety, and linguistic needs.
He emphasised that the Haitians’ rights to a fair court hearing and the ability to seek asylum have been guaranteed.
The dire humanitarian crisis in Haiti, compounded by escalating violence and insecurity, has led to a significant number of people leaving their homes or even the country, often through perilous circumstances.
Dr. Chang, who was joined by Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, during the visit, underscored the longstanding and strong friendship between Jamaica and Haiti, both bilaterally and within regional and hemispheric frameworks.
As Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Chang noted that Jamaica consistently stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Haiti.
The concerning situation in the French-speaking nation, which has prompted the arrival of this particular group in Jamaica, remains a focus of international concern.
Prime Minister Holness has been actively engaged in regional and global discussions to seek a sustainable resolution to the crisis in Haiti.
Jamaica’s actions on both regional and international platforms underscore the nation’s dedication to upholding human rights for all individuals.
The relationship between Jamaica and Haiti, particularly concerning these Haitian nationals, is built upon a foundation of respect for their fundamental rights to life, liberty, and personal security, Dr. Chang reiterated.
