“Fight Fire With Fire” Says Coach Donaldson Ahead Of Jamaica’s Clash With Brazil!

As the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup reaches a crucial stage, the Reggae Girlz are set to face a do-or-die Group H clash against Brazil, with a chance to advance to the second round.

Head coach Lorne Donaldson has expressed his team’s determination to fight for their historic progress in the tournament, highlighting the significant strides they have made since the last World Cup.

In a recent interview, he was asked what he expects from Brazil in the upcoming game against Jamaica. He responded saying:

“Attacks in waves and attacks in waves and attacks in waves. All their skilled players coming out. The first 15 minutes, I think they will come out like a bunch of wild hyenas getting after their prey. We have to be ready to fight fire with fire.”

Reflecting on the game against Panama, Donaldson acknowledged the challenge the team faced and praised the opponent’s tenacity. He expected a tough battle, especially after their big result against France, and foresaw that set-pieces would play a crucial role in the match. He highlighted Allyson Swaby’s performance, including her winning goal from a corner kick, which proved pivotal in securing the much-needed victory.

Coach Donaldson praised Swaby’s growth, especially after facing challenges in her club career. He attributed her improved form to a training camp in Jamaica and the hard work she put in before the tournament. The coach also emphasised the positive impact of pairing the two Swaby sisters, Allyson and Chantelle, in the team.

Comparing their current performance with the previous World Cup, where they had zero points after two games, Donaldson highlighted the growth of the team. He pointed out that the increased belief and the improved squad have made a significant difference, and they are now in a much better position to compete at a higher level.

The coach also shared his joy at seeing women’s football gaining more support in Jamaica. He appreciated the growing interest and the backing they received from fans across the nation. Donaldson believes that the success of the Reggae Girlz can elevate women’s sports in Jamaica, following in the footsteps of track and field, which has been the nation’s sporting gem for years.

With star player “Bunny” Shaw back in the lineup, the coach acknowledged her importance to the team. However, he stressed that success will depend on a collective defensive effort  against Brazil. He expects a fierce onslaught from the Brazilian side, and the Jamaican team must be prepared to match their attacking prowess.

Jamaica will take on Brazil on Wednesday, August 2 (5am Jamaica time).
