Jamaica’s Sangster International Airport Getting MAJOR Upgrades To Become World-Class Facility!
The Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay, St. James, is currently undergoing a major modernisation process to elevate it to a world-class facility.
The planned US$70-million runway expansion, the world’s first Bob Marley (One Love)-branded restaurant, and enhancements to the immigration hall, departure lounge, outbound security, landside roads, and parking arrangements are among the developments expected to put the airport on par with top airports worldwide.
Delano Seiveright, a Senior Strategist/Adviser in the Ministry of Tourism, said that upon completion of the upgrades, the airport would compare favorably to airports such as Heathrow, Atlanta, JFK, Qatar, and Dubai.
“Guests flying into Jamaica from anywhere will experience a ‘wow’ factor,” he added.
Seiveright praised MBJ Airports Limited, the operator of Sangster International Airport, for their hard work and vision.
The airport, which connects Jamaica to over 60 international destinations, had a record 4.7 million passengers in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shane Munroe, CEO of MBJ, agreed that the plan is to modernise and enhance the airport’s aesthetic appeal, making it an attraction in itself.
Munroe said that as Jamaica’s busiest gateway and the top airport in the region, MBJ has the responsibility to continually improve the airport’s infrastructure, creating a seamless travel experience for visitors.
He also revealed that several projects are planned for this year to further improve the airport’s infrastructure. These include expanding the immigration hall to increase queuing and processing capacity, constructing a lounge for air-to-sea passengers, and upgrading the landside road and parking infrastructure to increase capacity.
The runway expansion works are on schedule and are set to be completed by June 2023.
