Reggae Girlz Beat Mexico In Crucial World Cup Qualifier!
On Monday night, Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz took a huge step closer to qualifying for back-to-back FIFA Women’s World Cups after beating host country Mexico 1-0 in their opening Group A fixture of the Concacaf Women’s Championship in Monterrey, Mexico.
The Concacaf Women’s Championship is the region’s final round of qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.
It also serves as a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
Jamaica scored early courtesy of a sublimely placed header by Khadija Shaw in the eighth minute via a free-kick by Deneisha Blackwood.
Mexico came close to equalising in the 15th minute with a header from Diana Ordonez being denied by the goalpost.
Jamaica was awarded a penalty in the 35th minute following a VAR review, however Havana Solaun was unable to capitalise as her shot sailed over the crossbar.
Jamaica will have a stern test in their next game as the Girlz will face the United States.
