Major Earthquake Rocks Sections Of Jamaica

A major earthquake rattled sections of Jamaica at approximately 7:30am on Saturday.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 7 quake struck western Haiti 8 km (5 miles) from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, at a depth of 10 km.

The USGS says the following countries were affected by the quake: The Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands, United States Minor Outlying Islands, and Cuba.

A release by The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) also reported an earthquake in the region, saying it was magnitude 7.6.

  

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management confirmed the tremor but have not made mention of its magnitude.
