Marley on the ball to get AFC Ajax tuned up

AFC Ajax, one of the largest clubs in European football and on the verge of winning the Netherlands league title for the 35th time, will be sporting a Jamaican-inspired kit to tackle their 2021-2022 Eredivisie campaign.

While the recent news surrounding the Dutch giants had been focusing on whether head Erik ten Hag would move to managerless Tottenham Hotspur, it has transpired that Jamaican icon Bob Marley has become the inspiration for their future.

Ten Hag signed a new deal as manager of AFC Ajax on Friday (30 April), dashing the hopes of English Premier League outfit Spurs, which means that the 51-year-old should be leading his team out in their new third-choice kit next term.

The Jamaica-based Bob Marley group of companies collaborated with AFC Ajax to develop the design, one of the three kits that the club has to tackle the 2021-22 season, with replica shirts yet to be released for public sale.

The club will be still using their instantly recognisable famous red and white jersey for home games, with a glacial blue for away matches. But they will resort to the Jamaica-inspired shirt on their travels should their blue kit clash with the opposition.

AFC Ajax are planning to next season be sporting this all black kit, with the sponsored adidas trademark of three stripes featuring the Rastafarian colours (red, gold and green) around the shoulders as well as three little birds on the neck.

The club adopted Marley’s classic 1977 song Three Little Birds as their unofficial anthem for home matches in Amsterdam during a pre-season friendly against Welsh team Cardiff City in 2008. The tune has been blasted out at their stadium of the Johan Cryuff Arena ever since.

AFC Ajax will be aiming to improve on this term’s European competitions, having finished a disappointing third in their UEFA Champions League group games and then delivered the knock-out blow by Italian side AS Roma in the Europa League.
