German club announce Bailey has become a father on Twitter feed

Leon Bailey, heavily linked with a summer move to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, has become a father to a son on Sunday morning (14 June). The Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder was not part of the squad who were held 1-1 in the German Bundesliga battle at hosts FC Schalke on Sunday, which prompted his club to explain his absence on their Twitter feed before the match.

Quizzed on the social media platform by a fan as to whether Bailey was injured, Leverkusen clarified that the Jamaican international with electrifying pace wasn’t injured but simply preparing for the birth with his long-term girlfriend Stephanie Hope. His club responded to the query: “Nope, he became a father this morning”. Leverkusen confirmed, in their subsequent tweet, that his baby was male.

There were no queries from fans about his midweek absence in the German cup competition at fourth tier surprise package FC Saarbrucken, when Leverkusen cruised to a 3-0 success, as the entire first team were rested so that their fringe players could be drafted in.

His last appearance was his surprise flop against potential suitors Bayern Munich on 6 June, when the visiting champions elect breezed past the Leverkusen 4-2 with Bailey virtually anonymous in a rare start.

The 22-year-old made just his second start in five games since the German top tier resumed last month, following the coronavirus pandemic, and was replaced at half-time by head coach Peter Bosz.

Being one of the most talked rising star in the Bundesliga, having been voted the league’s 2017-18 Most Promising Newcomer in his maiden season and turning down a lucrative move to Chelsea, has left high expectations on the young shoulders of Bailey.

His stop-start season seems to never end with the birth of his child now added to his early season niggling injuries carried over from last term, two red cards and the recent enforced break from the coronavirus pandemic.

And to add more woe to Bailey he has been unsurped as the shining star at the Bundesliga high-fliers by German 20-year-old Kai Havertz, currently the hottest property in the league.

Although at least there is some good news for Bailey with rumours rife that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are keen on tempting him to ply his trade in England, having regularly watched him for the past two seasons.

Bailey has emerged as a favourite with the Leverkusen fans, having notched up over 100 appearances for the club who value him at £40m, and they certainly wish to lose their potential superstar.
