Jamaica’s Population Growth Continues to Slow
Jamaica’s population growth continues to slow based on data from the Economic and Social Survey Jamaica 2016.
The island’s population grew by just 0.1% during said year .
The survey claims this was as a result of three main demographic processes, namely, births, deaths and migration.
The island’s total population stood at 2,730,900 at the end of 2016, with a higher number of women (50.55%) than men (49.5%).
During 2016 there were 36,000 births and 19,600 deaths. Live births in Jamaica have consistently declined over the past 10 years moving from 43,200 to an estimated 36,000 in 2016, the lowest recorded number of live births.
The 19,600 deaths equates to a Death Rate of 7.2 per one thousand persons. Data indicates that the leading causes of death for males five years and over included traffic crashes as well as homicides with cerebrovascular diseases in second place.
