Jamaica Receives $1.6 Billion Grant From Japan Government
Jamaica has received a sizeable grant of $1.6 billion from the Government of Japan.
The grant is to be used to improve the communication capacity of first responders during natural disasters.
According to The Gleaner, the funds will be disbursed over a period of four years to acquire equipment under the ‘Improvement of Emergency Communication System Project’.
The project which is being spearheaded by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) will enable the provision of radio equipment, transmission and reception devices to key response agencies.
The grant agreement was reportedly signed on Thursday by Finance Minister Audley Shaw and Japanese Ambassador to Jamaica Masanori Nakano during a ceremony at the Ministry of Finance.
