Jamaica’s 2008 Beijing 4×100 Men’s Team Could Regain Olympic Gold
Nesta Carter Appeals Doping Verdict
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) recently revealed that the embattled sprinter Nesta Carter has appealed the decision to strip him and his 2008 men’s 4x100m team-mates of their relay gold.
Last summer, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Carter was among 31 athletes that competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 who failed drug retests for banned substances.
The announcement came after Carter’s sample from the Beijing 2008 Olympics was found to contain the substance Methylhexaneamine during re-analysis in 2016.
In January of this year, the IOC officially announced the team’s disqualification and ordered the team members to return their medals.
And because Usain Bolt was a part of the team, he is currently no longer a triple-triple Olympic champion.
However if Carter is successful with his appeal, his vindication would also see Bolt regaining his status as the the triple-triple champion – (gold medals in the 100, 200 and 4x100m events at 3 consecutive Olympic games).
A statement from CAS on Friday states:
“The Jamaican sprinter Nesta Carter has filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the decision issued by the IOC Disciplinary panel on 25 January 2017 in which he was found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. A consequence of such finding was the disqualification of Nesta Carter and the other members of the Jamaican team from the Men’s 4x100m relay at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in which they had achieved the gold medal.
Nesta Carter seeks to set aside the challenged decision in order for the Jamaican team to be reinstated as gold medallists.
A CAS arbitration procedure is in progress. First, the parties will exchange written submissions and a Panel of three arbitrators will be constituted. The Panel will then issue directions with respect to the holding of a hearing. Following the hearing, the Panel will deliberate and at a later date, it will issue a decision in the form of an Arbitral Award.”
