Fire at Bustamante Hospital For Children, ICU Patients to Be Transferred to UHWI
On Thursday night (January 12), a fire erupted in a section of the Bustamante Hospital for Children reportedly resulting in the evacuation of the institution.
The fire forced four patients who were being cared for in the ICU to be moved to another section of the hospital.
Arrangements have reportedly been made to send them to the University Hospital of the West Indie (UHWI).
The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) has since stated that preliminary reports suggest that the fire occurred at approximately 7:15 pm in the consultant’s room.
Staff members were however able to contain the fire via the use of an extinguisher.
There have been no reports of physical injuries.
The Bustamante Hospital is currently the only hospital that caters solely for children on the island.
However an agreement between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of Jamaica is set to facilitate the construction of a second hospital of its kind in Western Jamaica.
