5 Zika Cases Confirmed in St Elizabeth

The St. Elizabeth Health Department recently disclosed that five Zika virus infections have been confirmed in the parish.

The revelation was made at the monthly meeting of the St. Elizabeth Municipal Cooperation.

During the meeting, Medical Officer Tonia Dawkins-Beharie stated that since the start of the year, 260 suspected cases have been reported in the parish, with five being confirmed.

Zika virus is transmitted by the same mosquitoes that spread Chikungunya and causes a disease known as Zika fever in humans.

The symptoms are similar to other arbovirus infections such as dengue, and include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache.
