7 Newborns Die at Victoria Jubilee Hospital, Probe Launched
In 2015, a bacterial outbreak led to the death of several premature babies at two of the island’s major medical facilities, sparking widespread shock and concern.
18 of 42 newborns affected by a bacterial outbreak of klebsiella and serratia reportedly died during a period of three to four months.
A probe is now currently underway to investigate the recent deaths of seven babies at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital.
Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton, stated that it is believed the newborns contracted a bacterial infection from their mothers.
According to RJR, the deaths are said to be as a result of sepsis, a potentially deadly condition that occurs when certain fungi, bacteria or parasites attack critical organs in newborns.
The Health Minister disclosed that a four-member committee has been appointed to probe the deaths of the babies and a report is expected within a week.
