Thompson Beats Schippers Again, Wins 100m Diamond League Trophy
Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson is having a fairy tale season.
At the recently concluded Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she earned gold medals in the women’s 100m and 200m events and a silver in the women’s 4x100m relay event.
Shortly after the games, on September 1, Thompson added another gold medal to her burgeoning tally after she posted a new Diamond League record of 21.85 seconds seconds to win the women’s 200m at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Zurich.
Today, (September 9) the star sprinter beat the electrifying Dutch athlete Dafne Schippers over 100m to earn another gold medal at the last Diamond League meeting of the 2016 season in Brussels
Despite not having the best start, Thompson’s incredible acceleration proved to be much more than any of her competitors could handle and enabled her to cross the finish line in 10.72 seconds, equalling the meet record in the process.
Schippers clocked 10.97 for second while Christania Williams finished third in 11.09.
For her victory, Thompson won the women’s 100m Diamond Trophy and the US$40,000 cash prize.
