GOLD For Ali Atkinson in Berlin Leg of FINA World Cup Series
Jamaica’s Alia Atkinson won gold in the women’s 50m breaststroke event on the second and final day of the Berlin leg of the 2016 FINA World Cup series.
Atkinson previously won a silver medal in the Women’s 100-metre breaststroke on Day-One.
This win represents Atkinson’s first victory in Berlin. She swam a time of 29.00 to beat Russia’s Yuliya Efimova who finished second in 29.08 seconds with Katie Meili of the United States third in 29.37 seconds.
Atkinson narrowly missed out on another medal after finishing 4th in the women’s 100m individual medley in a time of 59.83 seconds.
That event was won by Katinka Hosszu of Hungary (57.12 seconds).
Last Friday (August 26), Atkinson equalled her own world record in the 100m breaststroke at the Fina/Airweave Swimming World Cup meet in Paris.
Her scintillating performance saw her complete the event in 1 minute 02.36, equalling the previous world record set in Doha, Qatar, 2014.
She finished ahead of Olympic bronze medalist Katie Meili of the United States who was second in 1 minute 03.52 seconds and Olympic silver medallist Yulia Effimova of Russia, who finished third in 1 minute 04.14.
