Goat Islands Won’t Be Used For Logistics Hub
Prime Minister Andrew Holness recently announced that the planned Logistics Hub for Jamaica will not be constructed on Goat Islands.
Mr Holness made the revelation while in New York on Thursday (September 22).
The Prime Minister cited potential environmental damage as the reason not to proceed with the project at that location but mentioned that there are alternative spots on the island that could be as good strategically.
The Goat Islands are part of the Portland Bight Protected Area.
Following his announcement, the Jamaica Environmental Trust (JET) expressed its approval of the decision not to use the Goat Islands for the hub.
Chinese firm China Harbour Engineering Company has for some time expressed a desire to build a trans-shipment port at Goat Islands.
However, environmentalists have been urging the government to find a different site for construction from the moment the Goat Islands was publicly announced to be the site for the logistics hub.
