Thompson, Facey Reach Women’s 200m Semi-Finals – Rio Games
Two Jamaican athletes have earned a spot in the women’s 200m semi-finals at the Olympic Games currently underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Simone Facey, running in heat three was second in her heat in 22.78s. Trinidad and Tobago’s Michelle-Lee Ahye took that heat with a time of 22.50s.
Running in heat four, Olympic gold medallist Elaine Thompson restrained herself to do just enough to earn the second automatic qualifying spot.
Thompson clocked 22.63s behind the Ivorian athlete Marie-Josee Ta Lou (22.31).
It was disappoint however for Veronica-Campbell Brown who failed to make the semi-finals.
Brown inadvertently crossed from her lane 6 to the adjacent lane 7 and finished third in 22.97s. She will go no further in the event as she needed a time of 22.94s to qualify as one of the fastest losers.
Bahrain’s Edidiong Ofonime Odiong won that heat in 22.74s while Semoy Hackett of Trinidad & Tobago finished second in 22.78.
The semi-final takes place on August 16 at 8pm (local time) 9pm ET.
