Rio Games Schedule For Jamaica – August 18
On Thursday (August 17), Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson pulled off a win that undoubtedly shocked sports experts across the globe.
Running in lane 6, Thompson defied the odds to defeat the 2015 World Champion – Dafne Schippers in the final of the women’s 200m at the Olympic Games currently underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Thompson clocked 21.78s to earn her gold medal, while the Dutch athlete crossed the line in 21.88s to finish second.
Only one Jamaican athlete managed to progress from the men’s 200m semi-finals.
Usain Bolt comfortably won his semi in 19.78s with his Canadian ‘bredrin’ Andre De Grasse finishing second in 19.80.
However, both Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade failed to make the final.
Blake clocked 20.37 to finish behind the American athlete Justin Gatlin, who finished third. Gatlin also failed to progress.
Nickel Ashmeade (20.31s) was fourth in his semi-final.
Tonight – Usain Bolt will try to defend his 200m Olympic title and he also hopes to break his own world record.
