Online Fund Set Up For Former Miss Jamaica Universe’s Final Expenses
An online fund has been created for Shakira Martin, the winner of the Miss Jamaica Universe 2011 pageant.
Martin died on Tuesday at age 30 after a long battle with sickle cell anaemia at a hospital in Florida (USA).
The campaign was created on August 3rd and aims to amass the funds necessary to cover her final expenses.
A segment of the online fund posted on GoFund me reads:
“It has been a long hard fought journey for the family and Shakira, but if we are to do her homage and remember the essence of her being, then we are charged with keeping her spirit of HOPE alive and living our lives to the fullest.
It is said that at the end of our journey we will be judged by not how we lived our lives, in terms of the riches and treasures we amass, but by the lives we touched on our journey. Shakira hands down mastered the essence of living. She lived fully, loved endlessly and touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.
Her lifelong dream was to live an exemplary life by showing her fellow “Sicklers” that the disease did not master her but she mastered the disease. If she felt it, she lived it and if she lived it, we all felt the love and the strength of her resolve.
Death did not conquer Shak, she master-mineded death. She remembered that life is for the living; although death can and will come like a thief in the night, let us rejoice and be glad in our time together and live.
Today is the first day of the rest of her HOPE, Shak’s Hope Fund, a foundation established in collaboration with the Miami Foundation, to elevate awareness, education and care options for other impacted families in the US, the Caribbean and around the world. The foundation endeavors to transcend the pain and the despair and show Sicklers how to live their best life in spite of the challenges. Let us band together to make her dream a reality.
