Driver of Ill-Fated Vehicle That Plunged Into Rio Cobre Was a Pro Diver
It has been revealed that the man who was behind the steering wheel of the ill-fated motor vehicle that plunged into the Rio Cobre on Saturday resulting in the deaths of six people was a professional diver.
The driver, who has been identified as Elfrego Slew is also reportedly set to be charged with six counts of manslaughter.
Slew was reportedly driving without a licence and is also expected to be charged for that offense.
He is allegedly familiar with the Rio Cobre as he had reportedly dived there several times.
His alleged familiarity with the river has led to several persons questioning why he did not try to rescue the other persons in the car and why he opted to go to the police station a day following the incident.
He was reportedly in good health when he turned up at the police station.
The vehicle – a blue 2012 Suzuki Vitara – plunged into the Rio Cobre at about 1 am on Saturday after the driver reportedly overtook a line of traffic and misjudged the turn onto the bridge.
It was owned and operated by 43-year-old Bishop Stephen Ricketts who also died and was carrying eight persons at the time.
The passengers who drowned are: Bishop Ricketts’ two sons Shevaughnie Ricketts and Sujay Ricketts of Commodore; 29-year-old Benjamin Ellis and 21-year-old Shantel Morris of Tawes Pen – all of St Catherine.
The sixth victim that was pulled from the Rio Cobre at 10 am on Saturday was O’Neil Robinson.
The other survivor of the accident was 19-year-old Shane Harris. Harris, who was originally from Tawes Pen in St Catherine had lived with Bishop Ricketts and his family for the past three years in the Commodore district in St Catherine.
