(VIDEO) Lisa Hanna Victim of Zika Virus?
In 2014, Jamaica unfortunately became one of the countries in the region that was ravaged by the dreadful Chikungunya virus.
It is estimated that 13 million man hours were lost as a result of that crippling epidemic.
Jamaica also reportedly sustained 6 billion dollars in losses as a result of the virus.
Now another virus – Zika, which is also transmitted via mosquitoes in spreading in several countries.
The symptoms of Zika infection are not very dissimilar to those of someone infected with Chikungunya.
The most common symptoms of are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).
The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
However there is scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Microcephaly is a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age.
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system.
Now outspoken Member of Parliament for South East St Ann and former Culture Minister Lisa Hanna has shared her suspicion that she has contracted teh Zika virus.
On a social media post on Friday, Ms Hanna posted the following:
ZIKA Update
