Montego Bay Man With Massive Tumour To Undergo Surgery Overseas
To say life has not been easy for 26-year-old Jermaine Barrett in recent times would be a gross understatement.
The 26-year-old from Montego Bay has been tormented by a massive growth on his face for over a year, and until very recently, despite a battery of tests, was unable to receive a definitive diagnosis regarding its cause.
Doctors at Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay, Jamaica eventually determined the tumor to be Chondrosarcoma – a cancer composed of cells derived from transformed cells that produce cartilage. Chondrosarcoma is a member of a category of tumors of bone and soft tissue known as sarcomas.
Jermaine, who was formerly the breadwinner for his family has been rendered unable to work for some time.
Now the former chef has a glimmer of hope. His heart-wrenching story helped garner him an abundance of both local and international support.
According to the Gleaner, neurosurgeons in New York have now pinpointed the exact location of the fast-growing tumor inside Jermaine’s head.
He is currently being prepared to undergo his first major surgery to rid himself of the cancerous lump, which he has been living with since last year.
“Everything that has to be done in preparation for his surgery has been done,” said Shena Carty of the Jamaican Madhouse team, which was instrumental in raising funds to facilitate Jermaine’s travel to the United States and the impending surgery.
“The procedure he did this morning (last Tuesday) was the last of any preparations necessary for his surgery,” said Carty. “They first mentioned Friday for the surgery, but, since, I’ve also heard next Tuesday (today) or Wednesday, so we are waiting.”
Barrett reportedly arrived in New York on Sunday, May 22, and had his first doctor’s visit the following morning. It is understood that after he was examined, a decision was taken to have four surgeons perform the surgery – an ear, nose and throat specialist, a neurologist, an ophthalmologist and a plastic surgeon.
