Another Jamaican Breaks Sub 10 Barrier
On Wednesday night, former Munro College and Jamaican national junior representative Senoj-Jay Givans became the 14th Jamaican male sprinter to run under the 10:00-second barrier .
This after clocking a personal best 9.96 seconds (1.6m/s) to win his semi-final heat in the 100 metres while representing the University of Texas at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division One Championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
The time makes Givans the second fastest Jamaican so far this year, only behind Yohan Blake’s 9.95 seconds, and the joint sixth fastest in the world.
Givans clocked 9.90 over 100 metres in 2014, however that result was wind aided with a reading of +4.2.
The maximum legal wind assistance is 2.0 meters per second. If athletes of receive more wind assistance than this, their times will not be eligible as collegiate, national, or world records.
