Jamaicans Form Largest Share of Black Migrants to the U.S.
A survey by the United States Census Bureau has revealed that black immigrants from Jamaica form the largest group of foreign-born blacks in the United States.
According to the study, half of the black immigrants in the United States are from the Caribbean.
The study estimates that 682,000 Jamaicans currently live in the United States, a figure which represents 18 percent of the foreign-born blacks in the country.
Haiti follows with 586,000 black immigrants, form 15% of the U.S. black immigrant population.
Approximately 8 percent of black immigrants in the U.S. are from South or Central America, the report says.
8.7 percent of of the entire black population in the United States are immigrants.
These estimates however, do not factor in the offspring of Jamaicans, which, with Jamaica being a predominantly black country would raise the number significantly.
Jamaican Americans, oftentimes called ‘Jamericans‘ are Americans of full or partial Jamaican ancestry.
The largest proportion of Jamaicans live in New York City.
There are also communities of Jamaican Americans residing in Philadelphia, Boston, South Florida, Tampa, Los Angeles,Orlando, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Cleveland, Western New York,Connecticut, and New Jersey an d other places.
The Top 10 Largest birth countries for black migrants to the United States in 2013 were:
Jamaica – 18%
Haiti – 15%
Nigeria – 6%
Trinidad & Tobago – 5%
Ethiopia – 5%
Dominican Republic – 4%
Ghana – 4%
Guyana – 3%
Kenya – 3%
Liberia – 2%
