Jamaican Man Seeks Asylum in Trinidad After Witnessing Crime

Despite the heightened tension in recent years between Jamaica and the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, at least one Jamaican currently residing in Trinidad appears to be getting ample consideration despite running afoul of the law.

The Jamaican man, Rujah Almantado Rhoden reportedly fled Jamaica to Trinidad a few years ago after witnessing a crime.

Rhoden reportedly fled on the advice of his mother “to save his life.”

According to Trinidad and Tobago’s Newsday, Rhoden was served with a deportation order for overstaying his time in the country in January 2015 and was ordered to leave by March 3, 2015.

His failure to comply has since resulted in his arrest.

On hearing his plight, Trinidad’s former Minister in the Ministry of National Security attorney Subhas Panday, stated he would write to National Security Minister Edmund Dillon with the hope that Rhoden is granted asylum.

Rhoden has also been fined TT $500.
