Jamaican Man’s Invention Utilised By Water Crisis Victims in the US
Jovan Evans is an entrepreneur and a fine example of the tremendous level of creativity that Jamaicans possess.
His ingenious invention called Pump-N-Spray is now being utilised by victims of a severe water crisis affecting Flint, Michigan (USA).
The Flint water crisis is a drinking water contamination issue started in April 2014.
After Flint changed its water source from treated Detroit Water and Sewerage Department water (which was sourced from Lake Huron as well as the Detroit River) to the Flint River (to which officials had failed to apply corrosion inhibitors), its drinking water had a series of problems that culminated with lead contamination, creating a serious public health danger.
The corrosive Flint River water caused lead from aging pipes to leach into the water supply, causing extremely elevated levels of the heavy metal.
In Flint, it is estimated that between 6,000 and 12,000 children have been exposed to drinking water with high levels of lead and they may experience a range of serious health problems.
His invention was created for persons who reside in areas where there is a consistent lack of access to running water in Jamaica.
The remarkable product literally transforms a four- or five-gallon bottle of water into a portable shower with the same pressure as a standard indoor shower.
A Washington-based-non-profit Servants Without Borders (SWB) has already distributed 200 of the Pump-n-Spray in Flint and additional requests are increasing rapidly with a second distribution planned in a few weeks.
