VIDEO: The Blind and Partially Deaf Jamaican Boy Who Defied The Odds

George Stern is blind and partially deaf and his remarkable achievements despite being physically challenged should provide a hefty dose of inspiration to anyone who may be feeling overwhelmed or discouraged by unpleasant circumstances.

As a child George was prescribed eye medicine that resulted in him losing his eyesight.

Though he lost his eyesight, he never lost his inner vision and drive to be a success.

He was born in Spanish Town and migrated to the United States with his family after he was diagnosed with Bilateral retinoblastoma at the tender age of two.

Bilateral retinoblastoma is a rare form of cancer that rapidly develops from the immature cells of a retina, the light-detecting tissue of the eye.

It is the most common malignant cancer of the eye in children, and it is almost exclusively found in young children.

Though most children survive this cancer they may lose their vision in the affected eye(s) or need to have the eye removed.

Despite the unfortunate events that have taken place in his life, he has defied the odds and has persevered to do incredible things.

He has even been labelled a genius.

While attending high school, George took advanced pre -college courses in the 9th grade.

One geometry teacher at his former high school stated: “He’s very very gifted, he’s very, very articulate and he really has an attitude unlike most students that I know.

A gifted mind

She also stated that George appears to have a calculator in his head — “I find it really incredible. I can’t follow along. I write down what he tells me. I write down more than he does”.

George gave the following reasons for his success in a 2006 interview:

“The whole thing with me succeeding started with my family and the religion that we have. I believe in God and I believe in all men being equal and therefore I don’t let anyone else’s opinion hold me back” – – POWERFUL WORDS
