Usain Bolt, Fraser Pryce Shortlisted For World Sports Awards

Jamaican sprint stars Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce have been shortlisted for the 2016 Laureus World Sports Awards.

Bolt’s competition for the sportsman of the year award include: the NBA’s biggest star Stephen Curry, golfer Jordan Spieth, dominant tennis world number one Novak Djokovic, five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and triple Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton.

In 2015 Bolt won three gold medals at the World Championships held in Beijing. He won gold in the 100m and 200m before anchoring the Jamaican team of Nesta Carter, Asafa Powell and Nickel Ashmeade to victory in a world-leading 37.36 seconds.

The 29-year-old Fraser-Pryce, who won two gold medals in Beijing, is among five women vying for the World Sportswoman of the Year award.

That category is headed by Serena Williams, who has received a record 10th Laureus nomination.

Last year’s winner, Genzebe Dibaba – the 2015 IAAF Female Athlete of the Year – is also on the shortlist after breaking the 1,500m world record in 2015 and claiming gold and bronze medals at the world championships in Beijing.

The other nominees are skiing world champion Anna Fenninger, swimming sensation Katie Ledecky, and Carli Lloyd, scorer of a hat-trick for the United States in the final of the Women’s World Cup.
