Second Person Dies in Jamaica After Contracting Swine Flu

The Ministry of Health has reported that another person has died after contracting the H1N1 virus commonly referred to as ‘Swine Flu’.

According to the Gleaner, Acting chief medical officer in the Health Ministry, Dr Winston De La Haye, stated the second patient to have died was a 49-year-old woman who had “other complicating illnesses”.

She died at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) on February 23 but a positive result confirming H1N1 was received only yesterday.

The first recorded person to have died from the virus in Jamaica was  fifty-year-old medical doctor, Suzanna Roye, who was also admitted at the UHWI.

Swine Flu is a category one illness which means that within 24 hours of suspecting a case of severe acute respiratory illness, medical practitioners must report it to the health authority.
