Jamaica Improves on Corruption Perception Index

Jamaica moved up sixteen places on the 2015 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). The CPI ranks the country 69th on the list of 168 countries.

The CPI was announced on Wednesday by Professor Trevor Munroe, executive director of the National Integrity Action (NIA). He explained that Jamaica spent the past nine years standing still yet the country is now moving forward, advancing from number 85 in 2014 to number 69 in 2015.

Jamaica advanced sixteen places, a clear sign that the country is being perceived as making progress in combating crime and building integrity. Only eleven countries on the 2015 CPI improved 16 or more places.

In the Americas, Jamaica also made progress, improving from number 14 in 2014 to number 7 in 2015. This improvement marks the first time Jamaica has been in the top quartile in nine years.

The director explained that Jamaica had “characteristically stalled in or near the bottom half of the ranking in the Americas.” In 2000, Jamaica’s recorded intentional homicide rate was 33 per 100,000 and in 2001 it was 44 per 100,000.

While there is still progress to be made Jamaica’s progress can be attributed to the country’s greater demand for accountability and improved responsiveness.
