Dangerous Symptom of Zika? Hundreds Paralyzed By Rare Syndrome in Brazil (Video)

Jamaicans have been urged to use every opportunity available to destroy or minimize mosquito breeding sites in the wake of the discovery of the Zika virus in neighbouring countries.

The Zika virus has already been detected in Haiti is being linked to serious brain damage in infants in Brazil and now doctors believe another serious health crisis may be developing because of the virus.

Officials in Brazil have reported hundreds of cases of a rare syndrome, in which patients are left almost completely paralyzed for weeks.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome, (GBS) is a potentially life threatening syndrome in which a person’s immune system attacks part of the nervous system, leaving some patients unable to move and dependent on life support.

Though more studies are needed to definitively link GBS and the Zika virus, a spokesman for the centers for disease control and prevention in the United States said that “reports must be treated as anecdotal because little pertinent supporting diagnostic information is available.”

Close to four thousand cases of brain damage in which babies were born with much smaller than normal, have also been reported in a 12 month period in Brazil.

Several countries including Jamaica have also asked women to delay pregnancy if possible because of how the virus can affect fetuses.
