A short list of women from Jamaica or of Jamaican descent who are “moving” and “shaking” things in a big way overseas. 🙂
Of course there are many more but these eleven are being highlighted today.

DR PATRICE SMITH: Now one of Canada’s leading neuroscientists. With elucidating molecular mechanisms mediating repair of damaged central nervous system as research. She is of Jamaican parentage.
JANET NOSWORTHY: Jamaican. Appointed to the Special Tribunal on Lebanon at the International Criminal Tribunal in Brussels. Former Ad Litem Judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
GRACE JONES: Born in Spanish Town and raised by grandparents. Her work as an actress in mainstream film began in the 1984 fantasy-action film Conan the Destroyer.
SHERYL LEE RALPH: youngest woman to ever graduate from Rutgers University.Ralph produced Divas Simply Singing, which has become an important AIDS fundraiser.
NAOMI CAMPBELL: One of six models of her generation declared “supermodels”.
CLAUDIA GORDON: the first deaf Black female attorney in the United States. Works in U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs. First deaf person to work at the White House.
MAKEDA SILVERA: Novelist and short story writer. Silvera emigrated to Canada at the age of 12. Published the first North American anthology of literature by lesbians of colour.
ALICIA KEYS: Singer, Musician and Actress, was born in 1981 in New York, New York. Her mother is Irish-Italian and her father is Jamaican.
SANDRA DENTON: Known for her work as a member of the female rap trio Salt-n-Pepa. Born in Kingston, Jamaica on November 9, 1969. Family moved to New York when she was a child.
DIANE ABBOTT: Current British MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. She was the first black woman ever to be elected to the House of Commons. The House of Commons is the democratically elected house of the UK Parliament, responsible for making laws and checking the work of Government
YVETTE CLARKE: Democratic member of the US House of Representatives from New York. She is ranking member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, Science and Technology.
