Jamaican Woman Becomes President of Shaw University At 34
At 34 years of age, Dr. Tashni Dubroy is not much older than many of the students that attend Shaw University, but on August 1, 2015 this Jamaican woman will officially begin as its president.
Dubroy is the daughter of Emerson and Greta Coote and is one of six siblings. She moved to the United States at age 18 before graduating from Shaw in 2002.
Later she attained a doctorate in Chemistry from North Carolina State University.
Her appointment makes her the second Jamaican and also the third female to serve as the school’s president.
The school’s 12th president, Dr. Talbert O. Shaw was also from ‘the land of wood and water’.
Dubroy started her career as a research scientist at BASF, the world’s leading chemical company. She quickly moved up the ranks, earning two promotions within a two year period.
Following her tenure at BASF, Dubroy was hired by her alma mater in 2011, where she served as an associate professor of chemistry and later the department chair of Shaw’s department of natural sciences and mathematics.
Last year, Dubroy was promoted and became a member of Shaw’s administrative team as the special assistant to the president for process optimization. In this role, she was responsible for increasing efficiency and reducing cost through a detailed analysis of the University’s operations to achieve quantifiable improvement and growth across all campus departments.
