Cops Warned Not to Post Crime Scene Photos on Social Media

With the proliferation of wireless high-speed internet access across Jamaica, anyone with a smartphone or similarly capable device and a data plan can take offensive photographs and quickly upload them to Facebook or other social media platforms.

According to the Observer, the Police High Command has warned police officers who might be uploading graphic crime scene photos to social media to desist from doing so.

The High Command said it has seen “unsightly or offensive” photographs and videos of incident scenes and individuals being posted on social media.

The High command also made it blatantly clear that the circulation of these photographs and videos via social media is “unethical and unprofessional”, and will not be tolerated.

“In addition, it is harmful, dehumanising and undermines the dignity of the victims and their families,” the Police High Command said. “Further, it is imperative that members in charge of crime and incident scenes exercise strict control to prevent unauthorised persons from taking photographs of victims which may later be circulated via social media.”
