Buju Banton to Be Released in 2019 After New Deal And Dropped Gun Charge

Incarcerated reggae star Mark Myrie, more popularly known as Buju Banton has struck a deal with prosecutors in the United States that should ensure that he is a free man in less than four years.

According to a report from the Tampa Bay Times, the deal eliminates a pending gun charge. In exchange he will stop filing appeals and the United States will no longer try to hold him accountable for a firearm that was carried by another man in the cocaine conspiracy that led to his decade long imprisonment.

The gun charge had the potential to add another five years to Myrie’s sentence, however, instead, he will be deported to Jamaica following his scheduled January 2019 release from prison.

Banton is currently imprisoned at McRae Correctional Facility located in the US state of Georgia.  He is serving a 10-year sentence on drug-related charges following his 2009 arrest at his South Florida home.  He was charged with conspiracy to distribute five or more kilogrammes of cocaine.
