A Frightening Ordeal! Woman Shares How She Was Robbed of Over $1 Million
A distraught woman shared a very frightening ordeal she recently went through with The Jamaican Blogs™ .
Justice Pat Walker attended a bank in the Portmore area earlier this month to carry out some transactions, but she could not have been prepared for what transpired after leaving the financial institution.
Read her account below and share your thoughts in the comments:
My friend from the United States came to Jamaica to settle some business, and so she and I attended a bank in the Portmore area on March 5, 2015, sometime after 1:00 p.m to do transactions from my accounts.
During the period I completed a set of forms as was request by the Teller. Then I had to do another set because it was more than one transaction. We were asked to take a seat for a short while, then we were recalled to the counter. I inspected while the funds were counted by the money counter, showing the correct amount of US dollars. I asked the Teller to put it in a money bag; and I deposited it in my handbag then we left the bank.
Being the security conscious person that I am, it was natural to scrutinize the environment and be extra cautious when I left the ambits of the premises. My friend and I made some other stops before we reached the Destiny Mall situated between Courts and the Gas station adjacent to Mega Mart.
As I alighted from my motor car and was about to lock my door, a young man attempted to grab my handbag. Of course I held on to it and a tug-of-war commenced which lasted for a minute or two. The damn thief managed to pull the handbag because both straps burst, one completely off and left in my hand, as I bellowed for ‘thief’ from my guts. He had another man waiting on an un-licensed motor cycle to make good his escape.
I immediately called the police at 119, but it was too late for them to apprehend them. During our discourse with the police who came on the scene, it was revealed that two other persons in recent times were followed by unscrupulous persons and robbed after doing business at that same branch. It was suspected that we were followed and targeted for this robbery. It is also the suspicion of the police and most persons who gathered at the plaza, that it is dangerous and unsecured to do business at that Branch, because of the frequent reports that they have been getting, and heard of in recent times.
Please be extra careful when doing monetary business in Portmore, especially if much cash is required, the police is willing to provide escort.
Very Scary!
Whenever cashing large sums of money in the bank, ask the Manager to let you receive the money in private. They can allow you to sit in an office while the money is counted and you receive it. That way no one in the line behind you can see how much money the teller counts out. Secondly, once you receive it in your purse, go directly to home or office where you can stash it safely. Don’t go shopping with a bag full of cash.
and what’s the point of this post if you’re not willing to name the bank in question?? How are consumers to protect themselves if risky places of business are not named?
That’s awful. The police must also consider that the bank teller may be apart of that robbery.
Irrespective of how alert you are the real problem is that the teller counts your money in clear view of everyone in the bank so all in the bank know how much you have withdrawn
Police need catch the thief dem lock dem up
That is very very bad
not to rub salt in a wound you couldnt get an escort you knw how desperate these thugs are
