On Tuesday Jamaica’s Chris Gayle became the first ever batsman to hit the 200 runs mark in a World Cup innings.

Gayle reached his total in exquisite style against Zimbabwe during a Pool B encounter in Canberra.

After luckily escaping being given out leg-before-wicket, the prolific batsman went on to score 215 runs off only 147 balls.

Gayle could have been out first ball.

Tinashe Panyangara, who had already bowled Dwayne Smith for a duck, curled one into Gayle and screamed in appeal for lbw. The umpire’s call was not out.

He hit 10 fours and 16 sixes on his way to his colossal score.

The 35-year-old batsman was finally dismissed with the final ball of the innings after attempting to hit a 17th six but was caught as the West Indies closed on 372-2.
