Police issues warning to shoppers after arresting vendor for selling young ackees

The police are encouraging shoppers to be extra vigilant when purchasing ackees as the fruit is highly poisonous when young.

According to the  police’s Corporate Communications Unit, at about 1:30 pm (October 28), lawmen were on patrol when a vendor was spotted using a knife to open ackees that were not yet fit for consumption.

She was taken into custody and more than 1000 ackee pods seized.

The female has been identified as 45-year-old Pauline Powell of Evergreen district, Manchester.

She has been charged under the Agricultural Produce and the Unlawful Possession of Property Acts.

Unripe ackee fruit contains a poison called hypoglycin, so preparers must be careful to wait until the fruit’s protective pods turn red and open naturally. (Source)
