Gunmen expressed their displeasure in spiteful fashion this morning by setting the Tacky High school in St. Mary ablaze after their demands were not met.
According to a report by Irie FM,there is uncertainty about when classes will resume at the Tacky High School in Gayle, St Mary following a fire at the institution early this morning.The administrative block which houses several offices including the principal’s was allegedly set ablaze by robbers .
Principal of the institution Errol Basco said he is unable to say at this time when school will resume because of the extensive damage that was done.Mr Basco says arrangements are being made with schools nearby to facilitate students who are to sit the CSEC exams.
A tearful Mr Basco says the school population is distraught by the ordeal citing that this has impacted tremendously on the progress of the school.He says all the records since the establishment of the school were destroyed.
The sections that were destroyed by the fire include; the principal’s office, staff room, bursar’s office, the records office, multipurpose room and the school auditorium. The school canteen, kitchen and storage room was also destroyed. The classrooms however were not damaged.
Reports are that four armed men arrived at the school about 1 am (May 5), held up the security guard on duty and demanded the combination key to a vault at the school. It is alleged that when their demand was not met, they tied up the security guard and went to the administration block.
Police say the men were heard chiselling a section of the administration block and about 5 am, they set the building on fire. Up to news time, fire units were still carrying out cooling down operations at the institution.
